Synopsis:
Tony Curtis was by 1955 an accomplished enough actor to get through the costumed derring-do of The Purple Mask minus the awkwardness he'd displayed in his earlier swashbucklers. Curtis is cast as Rene, a foppish 18th century French nobleman who doubles as the Purple Mask, a Royalist supporter who kidnaps officers of the Republic and ransoms them back to Napoleon (Stefan Bekassy) for a hefty fee. Managing to elude Napoleon's minions through most of the picture, Rene gives himself up only when the love of his life, the beautiful Laurette (Colleen Miller), is placed in danger. Even when facing the guillotine, however, Rene has a few tricks up his lacey, perfumed sleeve. The Purple Mask was based on La Chevalier au Masque, a play by Paul Armont and Jean Manouissi.

The Purple Mask is a movie set in 1803 in France when Napoleon Bonaparte rules the country. During this time, Rochet, the Minister of Police wishes to arrest The Purple Mask, the Royalist hero. He is disguised and no one knows his true identity. Rochet pretends to arrest the Count De Chauvac in order to trap The Purple Mask, who rescues nobles and kidnaps prominent people for ransom money. The Purple Mask then captures Rochet and sends a ransom note. On hearing this, Napoleon sends for Brisquet, an expert swordsman who has been sent away from Paris due to his constant dueling and instructs him to kill the Purple Mask...

France, 1803: 11 years after the Revolution, a royalist underground is led by a new 'Scarlet Pimpernel', the Purple Mask, who rescues nobles in distress and kidnaps Napoleon's officials for ransom, aided by the spy services of a group of lovely models headed by Laurette (really the Duc de Latour's daughter). But even she doesn't know the Purple Mask's real identity as foppish dancing master Rene...
