Pierluciano Guardigli

Synopsis:
He was born between 1415 and 1420 in Borgo Sansepolcro. The exact date of his birth remains unknown because a fire ravaged the municipal archives and civil status records. He followed, at first perhaps to Perugia, then undoubtedly to Florence, his master Domenico Veneziano. He only stayed in Florence in 1439, but it was a fundamental year for him because he discovered the works of Masaccio, Donatello and Fra Angelico as well as the theories of Brunelleschi and Alberti. In addition, Pope Eugene IV was in Florence that year for one of the last stages of the unsuccessful Council of Basel on the unification of the Churches. The young painter was literally dazzled by this city and, years later, his works would restore the memory of this experience in clothes, horses and urban settings. The report then follows Piero to Sansepolcro, where he lived until the end of his days, moving along the eastern coast: to Rimini, Senigallia, Urbino, Perugia, as well as to Ferrara and Venice, where he left traces of his talent, but no work. Finally, the sequences of a long reading of details lead to the discovery of Piero's masterpiece: the Legend of the True Cross, in the Franciscan church of Arezzo. And around Piero and his life, which came to an emblematic end the day Christopher Columbus reached the New World, we discover portraits of artists, lords and other figures of the early Renaissance, an age of gold for European art.
