Synopsis:

Born in the dimness of a cave in Palestine, Christianity was practised in secret for its first three centuries. Churches came into being because growing congregations needed places of worship where they could need and conduct their rituals. As Christianity spread to all the continents, more and more monasteries, churches and cathedrals sprang up. Their builders defied technical constraints, vying with each other to express the might of the Church through ever-higher and more spacious constructions.Religious buildings in places like Jerusalem, Mont-Saint-Michel, Florence, Moscow, Chartres abd Seville show how the style of Christian architecture evolved over the centuries, with some constants - the way they soar heavenwards and their continual quest for light.
