Synopsis:

Memories of Underdevelopment: Sergio looks back through his life following the departure of his wife, parents and friends in the wake of the Bay of Pigs incident. Alone in a brave new world, Sergio observes the constant threat of foreign invasion while chasing young women all over Havana before finally meeting Elena, a young virgin girl he seeks to mould into the image of his ex-wife, but at what cost to himself? Manila in the Claws of Light: Julio Madiaga, a simple fisherman from the province, travels to Manila to find Ligaya, the woman he loves, who went away with a mysterious woman who promised her a better future in the City. When he arrives, he becomes immersed in the city lifestyle and gets involved with its inhabitants, experiencing extreme poverty, hard luck, and the overbearing need to grind for daily sustenance. While Julio relentlessly searches for Ligaya, the city changes him little by little, and he becomes like an animal doomed to live only for survival in a wild, inescapable jungle. Chess of the Wind: The first lady of a noble house has died and now there is conflict between the remainders for taking over her inheritance. Touki Bouki: Mory, a cowherd who rides a motorcycle mounted with a cow's skull, and Anta, a university student, have met in Dakar, Senegal's capital. Alienated and disaffected with Senegal and Africa, they long to go to Paris and work up different con schemes to raise the money. Mory steals clothing and money from a wealthy gay man who had brought him home, and he and Anta book passage on a ship to France. Taipei Story: Lung, a former member of the national Little League team and now operator of an old-style fabric business, is never able to shake a longing for his past glory. One day, he runs into a forme teammate who is now a struggling cab driver. The two talk about old times and they are struck by a sense of loss. Lung is living with his old childhood sweetheart Ah-chin, a westernized professional woman who grew up in a traditional family. Although they live together, Ah-chin is always weary of Lung's past liason with another girl. After an argument, Ah-chin tris to find solace by hanging out with her sister's friends, a group of westernized, hedonistic youths.
