Synopsis:
Considered today as one of the greatest post-war French painters, Nicolas de Staël (1914/1955) experienced a romantic destiny where creation and tragedy intertwine. Of Russian origin, from childhood he experienced the drama of exile and abandonment to which he responded with an obsession with painting. Supported by elders like Georges Braque or René Char, guided by a frenzied quest for simplicity and the absolute, he gave shape to a demanding work, in perpetual evolution marked by his permanent need for travel. 'Nicolas De Staël, live painting' brings to life from the inside the major stages of the painter's career in the light of the months which preceded his suicide in Antibes. Thanks to exceptional correspondence, and the exclusive support of his family, this documentary produced on the occasion of the painter's retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in Paris reveals the last secrets of an existence led at full speed in the manner of a race towards the abyss.
