Synopsis:
Archaeologists Dr Roger Bentley (John Agar) and Dr Jud Belamin (Hugh Beaumont) stumble upon a race of Sumerian albinos living deep under the Earth who have failed to evolve in over 5000 years. They keep mutant humanoid mole men as their slaves to harvest their food. The Sumerian albinos' ancestors were forced underground after the cataclysmic floods in ancient Mesopotamia. These people have lived underground for so long that they are weakened by bright light. Whenever their population increases they sacrifice the old to the Eye Of Ishtar. They come to believe that Bentley and Belamin are messangers of Ishtar. They give Bentley a slave, a beautiful woman named Adad (Cynthia Patrick) who is shunned by the albinos because of her tanned skin. Ada and Bentley fall in love and he invites her to the surface - if they can ever get out....

So it starts out with an archaeological team in the 50's that stumbles upon this underground civilization of a lost dynasty of sumerians, who have apparently failed to evolve over the past 5,000 years. The plot becomes a but fuzzy here, but pretty much only three people survive. The albinos decide to sacrifice these three survivors, but they escape. One of them dies, but the other two (Dr. Bentley and Dr. Belamin) escape by shining a flash light in the albinos and mole people's faces. Wait- who are these mole people? They are mutant humanoid mole-type creatures that are the mistreated slaves of the albinos and resemble the sand people from Star Wars. Just like the albinos, living underground has made them highly sensitive to light. Anyways, the sumerian priest believes that the flashlight is the sacred fire of their goddess, Ishtar. They come to believe that Bentley and Belamin are messengers of Ishtar. They give Bentley a slave, a beautiful woman named Adad who is shunned by the albinos because of her tan skin. Of course, she and Bentley fall in love and he says she can come with him if they ever get out.

The Mole People holds the dubious distinction of being the weakest of the Universal-International horror films. John Agar plays Dr. John Bentley, who leads a Middle Eastern expedition in search of a lost tribe of Sumerians. Bentley and his cohorts follow a tunnel deep, deep, deep below the surface of the earth, eventually coming across a tyrannical tribe of albino Sumerians, who use the semi-human Mole People as slaves. What follows is so dull and plodding that stars John Agar and Hugh Beaumont seem like Mel Gibson and Arnold Schwarzenegger in comparison. Some prints of The Mole People are minus the pre-credits 'explanation' by 1950s celebrity egghead Dr. Frank Baxter.
