Synopsis:
The frankincense trees of Wadi Dawkah and the remains of the caravan oasis of Shisr/Wubar, and the associated ports of Khor Rori and Al-Balid, provide a vivid picture of the frankincense trade that flourished in this region for centuries as one of the most important trading activities of the ancient and medieval world. This Nabataean caravan city, inhabited since prehistoric times, was a major crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Partly built and partly hewn from the rock, Petra is surrounded by mountains full of passages and gorges and is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Ancient oriental traditions blend with Hellenistic architecture. This exceptionally well-preserved desert castle, built in the early 8th century, was a fortress that was occasionally used as a garrison or residence for the Umayyad caliphs. The most striking features of this small country palace are the audience halls and bathrooms, all richly decorated with figurative murals that give an impression of the secular art of the time. This Phoenician city, where a trio of deities were worshipped, was known as Heliopolis in the Greek period. In the Roman period it retained its religious function and the sanctuary of the Heliopolitan Jupiter attracted thousands of pilgrims. Baalbek, with its colossal buildings, is one of the most impressive examples of the architecture of the heyday of the Roman Empire. Ruins of many successive civilizations can be found in Byblos, one of the oldest Phoenician cities. It has been inhabited since the Stone Age and has played an important role in the legends and history of the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Byblos is also directly linked to the history and spread of the Phoenician alphabet.
