Synopsis:
Built on a site that has been inhabited since Paleolithic times, the Baku Walled City bears traces of Zoroastrian, Sassanian, Arab, Persian, Shirvan, Ottoman and Russian presences in a continuous cultural lineage. In the inner city (Icheri Sheher), many 12th-century defensive walls are still standing. The 12th-century Maiden Tower (Giz Galasy) was built on older foundations dating back to the 7th and 6th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Shirvanshah Palace is one of the showpieces of Azerbaijani architecture. This square, laid out in the early 17th century by Shah Abbas I the Great and surrounded on all sides by monumental buildings connected by two-storey arcades, is known for the Royal Mosque, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the magnificent Qeyssariyeh Portico and the 15th-century Timurid Palace. All of them bear witness to the socio-cultural life in Persia during the Safavid period. Persepolis, the capital of the Achaemenid Empire founded in 518 BC by Darius I, was built on a huge partly artificial, partly natural terrace where, inspired by Mesopotamian examples, the king of kings erected an imposing palace complex. The importance and quality of the monumental ruins make it a unique archaeological site. Bukhara, located on the Silk Road, is more than two thousand years old. It is the most complete example of a medieval city in Central Asia, with an urban structure that has remained largely intact. Monuments of interest include the famous tomb of Ismail Samani, a masterpiece of 10th-century Muslim architecture, and a number of 17th-century madrassas. The historic city of Samarkand is a crossroads and melting pot of world cultures. Founded in the 7th century BC Like the ancient city of Afrasiab, Samarkand experienced its main development in the Timurid period in the 14th and 15th centuries. Among its most important monuments are the Registan Mosque and Madrasas, the Bibi-Khanum Mosque, the Shakhi-zinda Necropolis and the Gur-Emir Mausoleum, as well as the Ulugh-Beg Observatory.
