Synopsis:

A 17 ans, jeune et belle, Muriel pouvait avoir une vie heureuse. Recueillie depuis quatre ans par son oncle et sa tante, Mr et Mrs Lowery, après la mort de ses parents, elle s'était sentie à l'aise dans ce nouveau foyer : les stricts principes d'éducation de son oncle ne la gênaient pas, la compagnie de sa cousine Patricia, un peu plus jeune qu'elle, ne lui était pas pénible, bien que leur amitié fût superficielle, et puis, il y avait l'amour fou de son cousin Andrew. Cette idylle d'adolescents avait d'abord été un paradis pour elle, mais, progressivement, les avances de son séduisant patron, Jack Armstrong, un homme mûr, avait éloigné Muriel d'Andrew.
