Synopsis:
No french review yet:
A moving history series tracing the landscape, lives and legacy of the Highland Clearances, in which tens of thousands of men, women and children were evicted, often violently, from their homes to make way for large scale sheep farming in the 18th and 19th century. Presented by Taggart star John Michie, it journeys through the geography and history of Scotland, as he reveals the story of how the highlands went from thriving communities to beautiful but barren landscapes. It charts 200 turbulent years of Scotland s past - from the 17 th Century when James VI of Scotland became James I of England, uniting the crowns, via the Jacobite Uprisings that almost finished the Highlanders, until the 1800s when those that remained were killed or driven from the land they d worked for generations, not because of warfare, but to make way for the more profitable sheep flocks. Each episode follows John on one section of his journey as he meets local historians and academic experts who show him around castles and battlefields and abandoned villages. The stories are beautifully illustrated with stunning photography, including outstanding aerials, and accompanied by narration from John.
