Synopsis:

1943, l'état-major britannique en Lybie envoie un commando s'emparer de documents militaires allemands. A sa tête, le major David Brand, militaire de carrière sans vraiment l'expérience du combat, secondé par la capitaine Leith, archéologue de profession. Les deux hommes, de tempéraments opposés et amoureux de la même femme, se connaissent mais ne s'estiment guère. Le trajet de retour sera long et périlleux.
