Synopsis:
No french review yet:
In 'Rosas de Ermera', director Luís Filipe Rocha enters the memoires of Maria and João Afonso, anchored in letters and photographs, to tell an episode of the parting of the Afonso dos Santos family, in Mozambique 1939. The parents leave for Timor-Leste, for professional reasons taking the youngest daughter (Mariazinha) with them. The two brothers, João and José Afonso dos Santos (Zeca Afonso), travel to Coimbra to continue their studies. Shortly after the separation in 1939, the Second World War began. Japan occupied the island of Timor-Leste was involved and created two concentration camps, where Portuguese prisoners, including the parents and the sister of Zeca Afonso, were held. The family thought that they had been separated forever but, six years later, they were reunited. In this documentary, with part of the memoires of the surviving brothers and the songs of Zeca Afonso, Luís Filipe Rocha tells a family story in a terrible time of the History of Portugal. 'Rosas de Ermera' owes its name to the roses in Ermera, a district in the interior of Timor-Leste, flowers whose scent still remains in the memoires of Mariazinha, sister of Zeca Afonso.
