Guinness executive Sir Hugh Beaver was out hunting and was debating with his peers whether the fastest game bird in Europe was the golden plover or the grouse. It occurred to him that a book that provided the answer to these types of questions could become very popular. And he was right! Sir Hugh Beaver's idea became a reality when he decided to commission Norris and Ross McWhirter, who had been running a research company in London for some time, to compile what became The Guinness Book of World Records. The first edition was published on August 27, 1955, and at Christmas it was number one of the best-selling books in the United Kingdom.
