Synopsis:
No french review yet:
Carmen comes from Switzerland and studies design in exotic Thuringia. After her brand new mixer gave up the ghost during an exciting attempt to bake a cake, she discovered a mixer from the GDR era at a flea market in Jena. It glows in bright orange, is significantly older than she is -- and still in perfect shape. It is called RG 28. Carmen is fascinated by the mixer from the "Elektrogerätewerk Suhl". To get to the bottom of the secret of its legendary longevity, she embarks on a research trip into the world of equipment. She asks constructors and technologists, designers and economists, historians, theologians and psychologists: What is our relationship to our products? And how is this relationship changing? On her trip, Carmen meets the people who once built her RG 28. She hears stories of a strange, defunct economic system, a system in which employees could completely identify with "their" company and "their" products. Is the inner connection of the creator with his work the essential prerequisite for a good product? Does it make a difference whether we produce things to make an entrepreneur or a shareholder a little richer, or whether we create things that we believe people need? Where and under what conditions are most of our everyday objects produced today? Why do we throw many of them away after just a few years? Can we still develop a respectful relationship with something that only has a short life expectancy? As indifference to things grows, does respect for those who created them also diminish? Her encounters and conversations ultimately lead Carmen to the question of whether it is ethically justifiable to deny our products what we hope for ourselves: a long life.
