Dealing with the period from 1919 to 1922, Saoirse? follows on from Mise Éire and chronicles the War of Independence, the Truce and Treaty, the establishment of the Free State and Stormont administrations and, most tragically of all, the outbreak of the Civil War. Saoirse? ends with a portrayal of the sad consequences of the split in the national movement: 'Thus is the city's heart broken- the nation's heart: thus companions part. A battle ends and a war begins- the torment of civil war. Bitter indeed is the ending to our story.'
