In Kabie Land, the Akpema is a ritual during which elderly women teach teenagers how to become dignified women. This ritual made me aware of elements in my grandmother's life that were the reason for my father's violent attitude towards me as a child. Now, as my younger sister's godmother for her Akpema, I have to introduce her to this story in order to erase the infamy sullying my grandmother's lineage. It's a story about handing down in Togo, an opportunity to get to understand the weight of tradition and the intricacy of our African cultures.
