Synopsis:
No spanish review yet:
OLIVER TWIST: When 9-year-old orphan Oliver Twist (John Howard Davies) dares to ask his cruel taskmaster, Mr Bumble (Francis L. Sullivan), for a second serving of gruel, he's hired out as an apprentice. Escaping that dismal fate, young Oliver falls in with the street urchin known as the Artful Dodger (Anthony Newley) and his criminal mentor, Fagin (Alec Guinness). When kindly Mr Brownlow (Henry Stephenson) takes Oliver in, Fagin's evil henchman Bill Sikes (Robert Newton) plots to kidnap the boy. MORNING DEPARTURE: The crew of HME Submarine Trojan locate an electrically operated mine which they cannot avoid. There is a tremendous explosion and the ship plunges to the sea bed. Emergency signals are sent and the Captain assembles the survivors to create an escape plan. Some can escape, but others will have to wait for the rescuers to arrive. Those left must battle with fear and illness whilst the rescue team attempts to raise the vessel. To make matters worse, there is a storm brewing. IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST: Algernon Moncrieff (Michael Denison) is surprised to discover that his affluent friend--whom he knows as "Ernest"--is actually named Jack Worthing (Michael Redgrave). Jack fabricated his alter ego in order to escape his country estate where he takes care of his charge, Cecily Cardew (Dorothy Tutin). Cecily believes that Ernest is Jack's wayward brother and is keen on his raffish lifestyle. Algernon, seeing an opportunity, assumes Ernest's identity and sneaks off to woo Cecily. MALTA STORY: During World War II, British photo-reconnaissance pilot Peter (Alec Guinness) discovers that the Italians are planning a secret invasion of Malta, a strategically important island nation critical to keeping the Allied supply lines open. Though they have few resources left, Peter and his commanding officer, Frank (Jack Hawkins), resolve to fight off the enemy and save the island. At the same time, Peter struggles to keep his relationship with a local girl from falling apart. ABOVE US THE WAVES: Based on an actual incident in the Second World War, this tale follows the efforts of three naval officers to destroy the German battleship Tirpitz, which holds a seemingly impregnable position in a Norwegian fjord. A TOWN LIKE ALICE: Jean Paget (Virginia McKenna), is a British office worker captured by the Japanese in Malaysia during World War II. Kept with other women prisoners, Jean eventually meets Australian soldier Joe Harman (Peter Finch), who secretly aids the weary group by stealing food. When Joe's actions are discovered, he is punished and Jean assumes him to be dead. However, years later, she finds out he may still be alive and sets out in search of him.
