Some 2,500 years ago, a man called Gautama became the Buddha or "Awakened One". Three centuries later, Asia's first religious edifices were built to house his relics. Buddha's teaching spread throughout the continent, giving rise to a sacred architecture that placed human beings at the centre of the universe. The cultures of countries as different as India, Japan, Burma and Mongolia incorporated Buddhist thought into their own belief systems. This syncretism spawned a myriad temples and sanctuaries as widely differing as the Landscapes of the vast Asian continent. Yet Asian Buddhist temples are all built on the same principles, featuring circles and squares that symbolize Heaven and Earth, and linking the human form to the cosmos.
