Synopsis:

Countless mysteries and enigmas of 500 years of world history lie concealed in the palace of the Holy Office, the headquarter of the Roman Inquisition, which was initiated in 1542. Today, its successor organization, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome, is the central institution of the Roman Catholic Church. The Inquisition exists to this day. The archives are the repository where trial files, letters, and countless notes on popes and heretics, spies and informers, inquisitors and persecuted thinkers are stored. The three-part docu-drama "The Secret Inquisition" relates the story of the Inquisition from the perspective of both the victims and those who judged them. What kind of people were the inquisitors, judges, persecutors, and censors? What motivated them, what goals did they pursue? The Secret Inquisition shows the search for answers in the most legendary archives in the Western world. In lavishly-filmed fictional reenactments, renowned actors give the key players in this drama a face. The fictional scenes are interspersed with documentary footage shot at original locations in Italy, Brazil and France. Vatican dignitaries and distinguished church historians comment on and illuminate the checkered history of the Inquisition from a contemporary perspective. They include Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who has recently become the new Pope Benedikt XVI and Peter Godman, a researcher and author of the book "The Secret Inquisition".
