Synopsis:
Polish bureaucrat Jozef Burski (Donald Sutherland) all but loses his reason for living when he is "downsized" by his government. Reduced to non-person status, Burski reaches out to his friends for moral support, but they turn their backs on him. Worse still, he doesn't know why he's been targeted for this emotional abuse; every time he tries to find out, something calamitous happens. The emotional strain takes its biggest toll on Burski's wife Mira (Anne Archer), who ends up in a state asylum. Suddenly, Burski's exile is lifted: it's all been a test of his loyalty to his homeland.

Set in Poland, a loyal politburo member has won his position by letting his superiors win at poker.Because of this he leads a very good and privileged life. However one day the tide turns, his daughter is knocked down, his job is put on hold, and his wife is put into a lunatic asylum. It emerges that this is simply a test of his loyalty, however on discovering this he decides to leave the country.

After a pampered Polish official is subjected to an extreme test of loyalty by his superiors he decides to flee the country.
