Synopsis:
Freedom (2001)
This fluidly constructed documentary from Argentinean director Lisandro Alonso follows one day in the life of Misael Saavedra, a woodsman who lives and works in a rural community.

The Dead (2004)
Released from prison after having served an extended sentence for the murder of his two siblings, ex-convict Vargas (Argentino Vargas) delivers a letter to his former cellmate's daughter before traveling deep into rural Argentina to reunite with his family.

Phantom (2006)
Argentino Vargas arrives in Buenos Aires to attend the screening of film in which he has the lead role. Although middle-aged, he has never been in a cinema before, so waits in the lobby for a guide. Misael Saavedra, also invited to the screening, loses his way in the huge building, occasioning a mystery encountered by the two men.

Freedom (2001)
This fluidly constructed documentary from Argentinean director Lisandro Alonso follows one day in the life of Misael Saavedra, a woodsman who lives and works in a rural community. As Saavedra rises with the dawn, he sets out to chops down several trees, and then cleans them of their bark before cutting them into timber ready for the fireplace; he eventually takes his day's work to the market, where it fetches him $27. As the rising and setting of the sun bookends Saavedra's day, he is also at the mercy of nature and the elements, as good weather helps him along and thunderstorms bring his work to a halt. La Libertad was screened at the 2001 Buenos Aires Independent Cinema Festival, as well as the same year's Cannes Film Festival, where it was shown in the Un Certain Regard series.

The Dead (2004)
The mesmerizing two-minute opening shot of 'Los Muertos' is filmed from the viewpoint of a man lost in the jungle, weaving among the tree trunks and underbrush, looking up at the sunlight streaming down, fleetingly glancing at two dead, butchered boys lying on the ground, then glimpsing the figure (but not the face) of a passing man holding a bloody knife. That horrendous but beautiful sequence is only the first of many. This stunning second feature film by the Argentine director Lisandro Alonso has a relatively simple plot: a convicted murderer named Vargas (Argentino Vargas) is released from prison after 20 years and travels by boat through the jungle to see his daughter. But the movie doesn't pursue the story in the expected way.

Phantom (2006)
The reigning master of Argentine minimalism, Lisandro Alonso ('Libertad') takes an unsettling swerve with 'Fantasma,' an enervating mood piece more like a self-reflective experiment than a finished film. In extreme long takes of graceful, Zen-like slowness, the camera follows Argentino Vargas, protag of Alonso's much-prized 'Los muertos,' around a labyrinthine theater in downtown Buenos Aires where said film is being screened. Just over an hour, this unscripted exercise brings to mind Taiwanese auteur Tsai Ming-liang's reverie about empty film theaters, 'Goodbye, Dragon Inn.' Pic's willful lack of content is unlikely to travel outside fests presenting crit pics for the cognoscenti.

Freedom (2001)
Misael lives in the immensity of the countryside in the Argentinian province of La Pampa, working with his axe. He gets by with the minimum necessary and almost no contact with other people. We follow him minute by minute, as we try to discover, through small actions, his way of being in the world.

The Dead (2004)
Vargas, a 54 year old man, gets out of jail in the prvince of Corrientes, Argentina. Once released, he wants to find his now adult daughter, who lives in a swampy and remote area. To get there, he must cross great distances in a small boat on the rivers, scoring deep into the jungle. Vargas is a quiet and self-contained man. He possesses the restraint of those living close to nature. A deep mystery surrounds him, the people he encounters and the places he goes through, all that taking in the unalterable world he finds almost unchanged after his long years of incarceration.

Phantom (2006)
Fifty-six years old Argentino Vargas arrives in Buenos Aires. Standing in the main lobby of the San Martin Theater, he waits for someone to come and take him up to the 10th floor for a screening of the film in which he has the lead role. He's never set foot in a cinema. Misael Saavedra, who has also been invited to the screening, loses his way in the theater trying to find the screening room. The tall building, its rest rooms, staircases, elevators and workshops are the real protagonists of a mystery encountered by two man who are strangers to this setting.
