Synopsis:

Alberto Seixas Santos's Mal (or Evil), by coincidence, is really the LA of Magnolia translated to Lisbon. A middle-aged Irish woman (Pauline Cadell) is tortured by the infidelities of her infernally handsome lawyer husband (Rui Morrison); an old man from the country hunts for his runaway granddaughter; street kids rob and murder. And gradually the disparate tales are woven together into a human definition of the film's title. What's good is the acting (from Cadell and Morrison especially, locked in a self-destructive passion they can't escape) and the detailed observation of a seedy, unfamiliar city. Seixas Santos draws his stories from the rhythms of ordinary life. What isn't so successful is a finale which swings almost apologetically into grand symbolism and is over in a trice. You wish it had rained frogs instead.

This film about contemporary life in Lisbon concerns an Irish woman, Cathy, who dearly loves her Portugese lawyer husband Pedro. Though, unbeknownst to her, he engages in one tryst after another. Cathy soon finds herself trying to help a young delinquent get off heroin, while the youth's desperate mother joins a weird religious cult. In other segments, an elderly man is nearly driven mad with grief at the loss of his granddaughter in a train station, while a down-and-out jeweller ushers the young girl to a hotel room.
