Synopsis:

No one can take exception to the wisdom that is eminently displayed in 'Calamity Jane and Sam Bass,' which opened at the Criterion on Saturday. It is that man's most loyal and dependable friend is the horse and that, beside this noble creature, woman is a snare and a jade. Just look what happens to Sam Bass when he gets mixed up with dames after making a beautiful alliance with the fleet-footed 'Denton mare.' First the sheriff's sister tells her brother how Sam came by the horse and the sheriff, being narrow-minded, runs Sam out of town. Then the lady of the title, who loves Sam very much, blabs to certain parties regarding the virtues of the horse and ruins an honest swindle whereby Sam figured to clean up in a race.

Drifter Sam Bass shows up in Denton, Texas looking for work. Before long, he attracts the attention of pretty storekeeper Katherine Egan (the sheriff's sister) and that wild frontiers woman, Calamity Jane. Circumstances make Sam richer by a very fast race horse. But his seemingly good luck with horses and women leads him to disaster. Will he be forced into a life of crime?
