Chaïm Soutine - The name is familiar, the artist's work less so. The man, born in 1893 in a shtetl in today's Belarus, is a mysterious, shadowy figure. For this film, filmmakers Valarie Firla and Murielle Levy seized the handful of clues they had - a few books, an old film, a tomb at Montparnasse cemetery - and conducted an investigation with brio. They retrace the destiny of this fascinating painter, who was so tormented he destroyed the canvases that bespoke his anguish. This documentary is more than a well-deserved tribute to a major painter from the school of Paris. The filmmakers' careful inquiry and evident fascination for the man offer us a subtle approach to the work, and an encounter with a complex person, often detestable and deeply engaging.

Mention the names Picasso or Chagall to casual art lovers and prepare to have a lively discussion on the topic of expressionism; drop the name Chaim Soutine into the conversation, however, and don't be surprised if you have to kick-start the conversation. Despite establishing himself as a formidable force in the world of French expressionism by serving as a crucial connecting factor between the classical and abstract-expressionist movements, the Russian-Jewish painter owes much of his fame to American collector Albert Barnes, who helped bring his work to an international audience. Interviews with contemporaries and archival documents paint a vivid portrait of the lesser-known painter who ultimately succumbed to a perforated stomach ulcer at the age of 50. This is the only Chaim Soutine video. Stars also making their debut in this video: Valerie Firla, Murielle Levy.

The work of Lithuanian painter Soutine with an account of his life.
