Synopsis:

King, around 40, runs a bar in Bor, a mining town in decline, in Serbia. A loner, he lives only for the present, and his motorbike. Years ago, an affair with Ruzica, his best friend Animal's wife, led to Animal's death and Ruzica in prison for his murder. King now avoids everyone but Zlatan, Animal's simple-minded young brother, whom King looks after, from guilt or pity. When Ruzica emerges from jail, though still drawn to King, she plans to marry Whitie, a good man who has proven his steadfast love. Her teenage daughter, Rosa, is damaged and wild, into drink and drugs. One night, she meets the legendary King for the first time. King is attracted to her youth, her untamed nature similar to his, or her resemblance to her mother: he doesn't know and he doesn't care.

In the Serbian drama 'White White World: The Miner's Opera' ('Beli Beli Svet'), the characters sing, but never dance. Formulated as a modern day Greek tragedy set in the decrepit southeastern mining town Bor, the movie follows a close group of alienated locals through misguided love affairs and other brash misdeeds. But the songs feature no choreography or other stylish methods of breaking the harsh, downtrodden tableaux. It's a surprisingly effective strategy. With his sophomore effort, director Oleg Novkovic uses musical expression to frame inner monologues that would never work in spoken form. As a result, a story exclusively populated by damaged people engaged in morally ambiguous, often depraved behavior manages to evoke sympathy for all of them.

There are several mournful songs in Serbian director Oleg Novkovic's 'White White World' that seem to emerge from the melancholy Balkan souls of its array of defeated characters struggling to find love and meaning in life. With a screenplay by noted Serbian playwright and poet Milena Markovic, Novkovic's tale is what he describes as 'a miner's opera' set among men and women whose damaged lives reflect the poisoned remnants of a decaying mining town called Bor in southeast Serbia.
