Synopsis:
Regarded as an even lower class than Hollywood studio extras -who had their own denunciation film, Slavko Vorkapich and Robert Florey's Expressionist classic The Life and Death of 9413: a Hollywood Extra, which would make for an interest double feature- Spanish actors who were called to perform in alternative versions during the transition to sound films remain as a curious margin note in film history. Even when they starred in big budget films the very studios that made them seem uninterested in remembering. And that's precisely what Pérez and De Ribot's documentary tries to rescue from oblivion: the lives of all those actors and actresses who crossed over the Atlantic to work almost invisibly in the 30's American film industry. Backed by an informative voice over and a bucolic camera that captures California's deserted landscapes, Hollywood Talkies becomes a severe and fair portrait of a generation of artists alienated by the promise of a life just like the ones the stars used to live.

Over 70 years ago, a group of young Spanish actors left for America with the dream of becoming stars. Sound cinema was in its beginnings and the Hollywood studios started to produce Spanish versions of their films. Through the landscapes of yesterday in the Los Angeles of today, the profoundly alive presence of those who are long gone is revealed. The tale of a journey to nowhere on a road with no return. Ghostly remnants of a story that fades away into a world of shadows and oblivion.
