Synopsis:
Istvan Szabo's drama, set in Hungary in the 1960s, stars Helen Mirren as a maid and Martina Gedeck as a well-to-do novelist who form an unlikely bond. Faultlessly directed with Old World taste and conviction by Istvan Szabo, The Door describes the unusual relationship between a well-to-do novelist and her poor, elderly maid. A showcase for the formidable acting talent of leads Helen Mirren and Martina Gedeck (The Lives of Others), this character-driven drama feels too traditional, however, to rally the audiences that Mirren's performance, in particular,
deserves. Magda, a female writer struggling for success, employs an elderly woman called Emerence to be her housekeeper. From their first encounter, it is clear that Emerence is no ordinary maid. Although everyone in the neighbourhood knows and respects her, no one knows anything about her private life or has ever been allowed to enter her home. However, a dramatic event in the writer's life prompts Emerence to unveil glimpses of her traumatic past - a past which sheds light on her very peculiar behaviour. The Door brilliantly illustrates the bond as it develops between these two very different women and, ultimately, the tragic end of their relationship.

In 1960s Budapest, aspiring author Magda (Martina Gedeck) lives a comfortable life with her professional husband Tibor (Károly Eperjes) in their upmarket 2nd district apartment, across the road from the humble flats where Emerenc (Helen Mirren) sweeps the pavement every day. When Magda sees Emerence toil at some washing, she asks her to be their housekeeper. The brittle response doesn't augur well, but Emerence soon arrives on Magda's doorstep ready to work. Emerenc is difficult and complicated, but they struggle through the relationship - and jointly bring up a dog - while Magda's literary success grows. But no TV fame for Emerenc, who lives behind her closed door, where no-one is allowed to venture.

The Door from Director Istvan Szabo tells the story of two isolated women each distanced from their respective worlds by vastly different circumstances who forge an unlikely friendship over the course of their lifetimes. Set in mid-20th century Hungary, a country at the time still overrun by the effects of the war and buried under the lingering shadows of suspicion and mistrust, The Door quietly reveals the deeply complex relationship between the affluent, emerging writer, Magda and the mysterious and distant housekeeper, Emerenc. As Magda marches steadily towards professional recognition and success, Emerenc retreats to her past, leading to an emotional discovery with life-changing consequences.
