Synopsis:
The Princess of Egypt is the debut feature film of the director, Jan Forsström, previously known for his screenwriting talent… The film, inspired by true events, is a story of a mother's love and xenophobia stemming from insecurity. Fresh acting faces bring to the film a documentary-like realness that the subject calls for. Emmi Parviainen throws herself amidst issues of motherhood with strength and sensitivity. Mazdak Nassir, an award-winning film-maker… is also convincing as the 'familiar stranger' who rattles the family balance.

Marja is a 27-year-old single mom and lives with her daughter Julia in a dreary neighbourhood of high-rises on the outskirts of town. She works nights delivering newspapers and spends her overtired days taking care of her daughter Julia. Marja's childless neighbour is one of her few social contacts. Freshly divorced, she tells Marja that she never wanted children. Now she's afraid of being alone in winter and that seems to be why she is attempting to get closer with Marja. But it is still August and Julia is supposed to start school for the first time. One day a good-looking man shows up at the park and seems to really hit it off with Julia. The both of them start to form a friendship. It turns out that Kamaran, a Kurdish immigrant and successful businessman, is Julia's father. He never even knew that he had a daughter. Maria instantly forbids her daughter from visiting with her father. As Julia starts to realize who this strange man is, Marja starts turning more and more possessive. She feels like she is being stalked by Kamaran. No, that man is not your father, she lies to Julia, your father is the 'King of Egypt'. And when Kamaran's wife suddenly shows up, Marja starts losing control. She is overwhelmed by her fear of losing Julia. She buys an illegal gun and barricades herself in the apartment with Julia. She refuses to let the girl go to school - and the film starts heading towards a melodramatic horror ending - with a surprising twist at the end that plays with our own prejudices.
