Synopsis:

Described by one critic as a combination of Luis Buñuel and Joe Swanberg, this ultra-independent, microbudget film is a plotless series of surreal, absurdist sketches: a housewife has a face transplant; considerate burglars tidy up the house they have robbed; a waiter turns a simple order into a Tolstoy-size manuscript; a father picking up his son from school gets trapped in a no-exit news program... Spain's recent economic crisis (and its upending of ordinary reality and logic) is the subtext linking the sketches, which feature gratis guest appearances by many of Cavestany's well-known actor friends, including Antonio de la Torre, Eduard Fernández, and Maribel Verdú.

Comedy, drama, social chronicle, horror and surrealism with a common denominator: the uncompromising poetry of of the human condition against the onslaught of the unusual and the chaotic. An ambitious film, made up of twenty short scenes with different tones and subjects. There is no link between them, quite the opposite. The arbitrariness will in itself lend a feeling of unity to the discourse.

Spanish independent film director Juan Cavestany's People in Places explores Spain's social instability following its economic crisis through the lens of surrealism that has famously been represented by other Spaniards such as Luis Buñuel. As his first feature film, Cavestany served as a one-man crew on a microbudget in collaboration with a mix of some of Spain's greatest actors and new and unknown faces.
