Synopsis:
This 10 part multi-layered, rich and fast paced TV series follows the stories of characters in and around the Russian mafia in Berlin, especially the story of the 2 main characters Marek and Jelena - one the part of a pair of cops and himself of Russian descent who is looking for the murderer of his brother, the other lured with her best friend to Germany in the promise of work but ending up as a prostitute. They both get drawn into a power struggle in the mafia, face police corruption, the drama of human trafficking and much more. The series touches on the complexity of crime syndicates and society here in the example of the metropolis of Berlin. On the individuals levels is shows the quest for happiness in life and the different choices people make. This series not only catches the attention the through the excellent and complex story telling but the high quality production and very excellent cast (think of this German series as HBO or BBC like).

In the 1920s, when hundreds of thousands of exiled Russians, who had fled Leninʼs revolution, began to make their mark on Berlinʼs urban landscape, the cityʼs inhabitants nicknamed Charlottenburg Charlottengrad. Dominik Graf ʼs In Face of the Crime is set in this part of Berlin several waves of immigration later. It is a daring story about duty and guilt, but above all about the difficulty of defining oneself as an individual in a world where one is defined by oneʼs origins. Marek Gorsky is a Russian Jew. He is a policeman and his sister Stella is married to a Mafia boss. Marek is drawn into a bloody war between two clans; he resolves the death of his older brother and falls in love with a young Ukrainian, who is forced to work as a high-class prostitute in Berlin.

In his unusual new film, Graf makes use of one of the characteristics of the serial format that should not be underestimated - the fact that one is allowed to go over the top, to concentrate on the supporting roles and on details. In one of the episodes, a subboss who would like to leave the 'company' is the main character; in another a couple made up of two corrupt police officers is the focus. A great epic, with a flood of stories that keep you rooted to your seat.

Set in Berlin in the Russian Jewish enclave of Charlottengrad, this serial drama centers on Gorsky (Max Riemelt), a cop who's pulled in conflicting directions by duty, his heritage and sibling loyalty while he strives to retain his own sense of self. A sister's marriage to a mob boss and Gorsky's entanglement with a Ukrainian prostitute are just the tip of the richly plotted iceberg in director Dominik Graf's idiosyncratic underworld epic.
