Synopsis:
Facing Genocide is a close portrait of the man who made Pol Pot's terror regime possible. Khieu Samphan was, as head of state, the public face of the Khmer Rouge. The film explores his personality and close relationship to Pol Pot. At least 1.7 million people were killed in Cambodia in less than four years. Now Khieu Samphan is put behind bars and charged with crimes against humanity and genocide. This is a unique portrait of a former leader's last moments in freedom. The lawyer Jacques Verges, often referred to as the Devil's Advocate, turns up in the film taking on the case of his old friend Khieu Samphan, Verges is specialized in defending terrorist and war criminals. Appearing is also Theary Seng who as a child survived a Khmer Rouge prison camp. She's now struggling to get justice for herself and other victims.

The film Facing Genocide is a search into the personality of Khieu Samphan. He was the Head of state of one of the most brutal regimes ever, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. We have followed him one and half year before his arrest in 2007. He is soon facing a trial and is charged with Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes and Genocide. The film gives insight into his mindset, his life today and his close relation to Pol Pot. It is a unique story about an ex-leader the time before his arrest and before he is put on trial.
