Robert T. Ironside, chief of detectives with the San Francisco Police Department, is shot down by a sniper's bullet while vacationing at a remote cabin. Ironside survived the attack, but became crippled from the waist down, and was confined the wheelchair. Realizing his skills as a crime-buster were too good to waste, Ironside became the head of his own special police unit; he moved into a specially-built office at SFPD headquarters, complete with sleeping quarters and exercise equipment, and inherited a crack staff: bland Sgt. Ed Brown, beautiful young Policewoman Eve Whitfield, and black ex-con Mark Sanger, who pushed Ironside's wheelchair and drove his special van. Whitfield eventually left the department, and was replaced by Policewoman Fran Belding, while Sanger graduated from law school, passed the bar, and married Diana.

While vacationing at a mountain cabin, San Francisco Chief of Detectives Robert Ironside is shot and wounded during an assassination attempt. The attack leaves him a paraplegic, however, he still feels he can be of help to the police. Ironside is offered the position of special consultant and helps the police on many of their most baffling cases. Helping Ironside is Detective Sgt. Ed Brown, policewoman Eve Whitfield and ex-delinquent Mark Sanger. During the course of the series, Eve leaves the force and is replaced by policewoman Fran Belding and Mark not only becomes a policeman, he also passes the bar and becomes an attorney.

While investigating a labor racket on the San Francisco docks, Ironside fires on a dockworker, who is killed. But when the autopsy comes back, it's revealed that the slug went all the way through the man -- far too powerful for Ironside's .38 Police Special) and came from a different angle (Ironside was facing the man and the slug came from the side). To clear his own name, Ironside sends Ed Brown undercover with a fake mustache, where Ed meets the brother of the dead man and the racket leader -- who carries a gargantuan Magnum. To avenge the death of the dockworker, ...

In the last episode to be telecast (apparently the show's cancellation came as a surprise to the producers if the three additional episodes listed here are correct), Fran is going to night-school art classes. Returning to the classroom to pick something up, she sees a clay model of a woman's face horribly mangled by a set of fingernails. Fran leaves again and is immediately set upon by someone who beats her comatose and leaves her for dead. Fran recovers enough to tell about what she saw, and Ironside's crew tries to figure out the motive. The clay sculpture was
